The rapidly evolving COVID-19 pandemic is touching all of us – from our workplaces to our households to our communities. The COVID-19 Humanitarian Migrant Fund will provide emergency funds to migrant families impacted by MPP Migrant Protection Protocols or “Remain in Mexico”, asylum seekers, deportees, and migrants who are currently stuck in refugee camps and shelters in extremely precarious conditions without access to medical care and basic necessities in order to survive COVID-19. The fund will support Al Otro Lado and key frontline serving organizations to cover unexpected costs due to unforeseen humanitarian impacts of the ongoing pandemic. The disproportionate effects of COVID-19 to our immigrant community are irrefutable, namely the lack of adequate shelter for social distancing or quarantine and lack of medical care, lack of access to proper nutrition and food, as well as testing and financial support.

Since its adoption last year, Remain in Mexico has forced close to 65,000 asylum seekers and migrants to wait in border cities under grossly dangerous border cities to have their case heard before a US judge. Many families and migrants live in shelters or on the streets, with little to no access to healthcare, financial and social support and during this pandemic, we know the consequences of this will only be magnified. There are thousands of immigrant families and individuals who are without access to adequate medical care and we are asking for your help today and in the upcoming weeks. Families deserve to be #SafeAndTogether.

The migrant humanitarian fund will directly support temporary emergency shelter and housing, food and nutrition care, medicine, diapers, formula, cleaning supplies, basic survival necessities, and phone and internet costs to help migrants communicate. All families, and that includes immigrant families, deserve access to testing, care, food, shelter, and financial support to survive the #COVID19 crisis.

We must move swiftly and strategically to protect the health and safety of immigrant families amid COVID-19!
